May 29, 2018 in Classical, Classical-ROTD, Recording of the Day

This work with an enigmatic title (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Barricades_Myst%C3%A9rieuses), typical of the “style brisé”, has fascinated listeners and performers ever since its composition. It is played here by Quebec harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour.

May 28, 2018 in Jazz, Jazz-ROTD, Recording of the Day

This brilliantly recorded album “We Like It Here” by Snarky Puppy became a viral sensation, pushing them up the charts and bringing loads of young people into the world of jazz. Lead by bassist Michael League, Snarky Puppy was founded in Texas in 2004, and although they call themselves “pop music without lyrics”, they definitely have a huge jazz influence with world class jazz musicians as members.

Herbie Hancock – I Thought It Was You

May 25, 2018 in Jazz, Jazz-ROTD, Recording of the Day

A little cheesy disco? Perhaps. Herbie is one of my favourite musicians of all time, and a pure jazz legend. Here’s a throwback to 1978, performing ‘I thought It Was You’.
