The Benefit Concert Series
brings together local musicians,
local food, and drink all in support of local charities.

Wednesday May 20th is the last event of the series’ first
François Jalbert on guitar and
Charles Trudel
on piano. These two young Quebecois
musicians have done a lot of musical exploration in their
young life. They are both classically trained and have
ventured since into a vast array of musical expression, from
gypsy to pop; punk to jazz…they’ve done it all. Theirs is a
contemporary sound that blends jazz, popular music, and
world sensibilities into a style and compositional world
all their own. Their repertoire combines strong melodies,
rhythmic and harmonic complexity, creating a world that is
both accessible and surprising.

Wednesday May 20th at 7PM
Gallery Gora
279 Sherbrooke St. West, suite 205

I stumbled on this video and subsequently forgot what I was looking for. This is simply amazing! I didn’t even know that Norah Jones had a half sister.

Google Play Music now available in Canada

June 3, 2014 in audiophile

On May 5th, Google announced that it’s streaming music service, Google Play Music, was now available in Canada. I’ve been using it for the free trial period, and I have to say I’ve been amazed at the amount of music I get to choose from for the same price as my Netflix subscription. I’ve now had a chance to explore albums that I would likely never have tried. While this is still lossy compressed audio, it is still as good as, if not better than expected from a streaming audio service. I’ll probably blog about some of the discoveries (and rediscoveries) I find.

Palazzetto Bru Zane’s French 19th Century music projects

June 3, 2014 in audiophile

In Le Devoir of May 31, 2004, music critic Christopher Huss writes about ”one of the most beautiful discographic projects of these last decades”, realized under the aegis of Venice’s Palazzetto Bru Zane, which aims at a rediscovery of 19th century French music. Four releases are especially recommended ((Massenet, Le mage; Massenet, Thérèse; Joncières, Dimitri, and a  portrait of Théodore Gouvy). A must-read for any lover of French music avid to discover more.
